Dear Tom since that incredible day in Khumjung I have always been inspired to follow my dreams. I am now in my 3rd year at university studying 'Performance' Music, dance & drama and right now I am writing my dissertation on the subject of 'Storyteller's'. How do they inspire their audiences? Fortunately I know! In my introduction I talk about that wonderful day you told your 'dream'story to the children of Khumjung and how they became part of your improvised performance. I will never forget their faces as you held up this plastic inflatable ball of the world and explained that it was possible for them to become pilots and fly. So I want to thank you again for still being a part of my life and continuing to inspire me. I would also like to congratulate you for fulfilling part of your dream - that of finding your love as I see you have got married. A film too, how exciting is that! Your life one day I am sure will become the subject for a block buster movie but even better than that - it's your life and you are living it! May the dream continue and I hope you are happy and healthy for they are the true wealth of man. Lisa

Your discussion about the fully covered Yemen women brought to mind a discussion I had while working overseas in Somalia. As in Yemen, although not strictly adhered to, the only part of the female body visible was the ankle. My colleagues told me that in local culture the men reviered certain ankle shapes, some shapes being more desireable than others. My friend noted wide based legs were the most attractive. Enjoyed your experiences in Yemen.

Hi Tom - Probably don't remember me, but I've been following your travels since 1996. I fly out of Oakland, CA as a private pilot. Since I'm the first to add a comment in the last 11 months, I'd like to first wish you the best in a world somewhat more on edge after Sept. 11. Your contact with the different peoples and perspectives of the world has undoubtedly provided some valuable insight. Your flight symbolizes the freedom of the individual will, and the respect that we should practice with one another and with our environment. It is sad to say, however, that many in the world do not have this perspective. Entire oceans and forests are being decimated by unmanaged fishing and logging practices. Coral reefs and other habitats are shrinking and the effects of our human influence on the atmosphere is uncertain. Your enthusiasm for adventure and ambassador of good will continues to provide optimism, however, that our species can still improve. Happy Trails!

Mary was in the broom closet, singing: Happy Wednesday to you, Happy Wednesday to you, Happy Wednesday, dear Tom, Happy Wednesday to you. 'Who is Tom?' asked Mother. 'Tom is somebody that nobody can see,' said Mary. 'And that is why he does not have a birthday. So I am singing Happy Wednesday to him.' 'Today is Tuesday,' said Mother. 'It is Wednesday for Tom,' said Mary. 'Tom will not have h-r-n-d, and he will not have g-k-l-s. But we are singing together.' 'What are h-r-n-d and g-k-l-s?' asked Mother. 'Cake and candy. I thought you could spell,' said Mary. 'I am sure that Tom will have cake and candy on his birthday,' said Mother. 'But Tom does not have a birthday,' said Mary. 'Yes, he does,' said Mother. 'Even if nobody can see him, Tom has one birthday every year, and so do you. Your birthday is nine months from now. Then you will be the birthday girl. But tomorrow is Gloria's birthday, and she will be the birthday girl.' 'That's how it is, Tom,' said Mary. 'Your birthday is always the one that is not now.' Dialogue by Russell Hoban...

Alikum Salam, Kief halak? Thanks for the speedy reply, I am impressed with the initiatives that you have launched and I am equally impressed with the true adventure spirit that you obviously live by. I have been involved in an adventure or two in my live and have recently settled down with the wife thing. Not a bad life but I admire someone who has the guts to do what others only dream of. The sad thing about life is that one can only truly enjoy the value of it once you have experienced adventure in the extreme. A quote I recently heard (don't ask by who) said that ; "When man is on an adventure he dreams of home, and when he is at home, he dreams of adventure!". So true and I realise it now. I would probably return to South Africa in the next two years, despite all logic telling me the opposite. I have the intention of getting my commercial license in the next two years and with that I would like to make a small living down South. Flying busses to different continents don't interest me in the slightest, although I do enjoy a good precision approach. I am more of a small plane, bushpilot hopeful. There is something indescribable about small planes and flying into tight little corners hundreds of Kilometres from nowhere that appeals to me more than any other discipline in flying. No doubt my love for the bush has something to do with it. I also enjoy the fact that man has to physically do something and be practical to survive. In todays readymade society you battle to find people who earn a "practical" living. The fact that you combine these traits with a spirit of giving and love towards other human beings makes this even more admirable. At any rate you have won a supporter in me (and that don't happen easily) so if you ever need a helping hand, give us a shout! You never know what I could help with until you try. Otherwise, it's a small world you never know.... Kind regards, Ma'ah Sa Lama Manni PS- I would like to order one of your videos "Flight Over Africa" . I have contact the order mail address but have not yet received a reply. Is this still the way to go about ordering?

Hi Tom, 1998 I bought a C-150 in SouthAfrica, just after passing my PPL...and I became Horizonsick...not only because of St-Exupéry...I knew that somewhere there are only a few others, travelling the skies...not exactly knowing, what to expect behind this never ending horizon...and we'll never know... I found myself fliing up through the bush...heading for Zürich, my place of birth. I experienced limits, cultures, wildlife...I guess I don't need to tell You about all of this... Finally, I found myself stuck in Yemen, where I was suspected being a spy...and had no other option than putting my 150 in pieces and on a ship and get the hell out of there a.q.a.p...that was the end of my first journey, and a sad one...but I hope to soon finallice my ATP in Switzerland...to maybe...whatever...live is a Journey towards a horizon, which we'll never see from close... Say hello to that freedom outthere...Thank You...Räto

Tom, As I read thru your journal kept on Togo/Liberia, I too felt the same way and in fact lived thru most of the horrors you experienced. I grew up in Liberia and Nigeria, and believe me having to be evacuated out of Liberia was not something to be treasured. Especially because when you would hear rumors or horror stories, it was and is still true to this day in the majority of Africa. -God bless you in your travels "Inshallah-if Allah/God wills." Glad to hear you're still on the go. I am a pilot also. Got my commercial on my 18th birthday. I'm 54 and still flying. I have flown all over Mexico, Central America and northern S. America. I know how difficult it can be in the third world. I know Africa Must be a real challenge at times. I was hoping to see more TV coverage of you adventure. I am also a school principal and your kind of adventure can be a genuine motivator for young people. Best of luck!!!!! Den

I'm a 3rd year Drexel student and this morning I was absorbed in my book on my daily commute to center city when the woman next to me chimed in, "What are you reading?" I replied, "Airman's Odyssey by Saint-Ex." Her eyes lit up and she said, "Is that the same author that wrote The Little Prince?" I nodded and said "yes". She smiled, "That is my eldest son's most favorite book, he is flying around the world, and he's been gone for, oh, nine years!" You can guess who the woman next to me was by now. Despite the short train ride, I managed to tell her that I was an aspiring pilot so she directed me to your website to read about your adventures. After doing so I think its all very inspiring. I have wanted to be a "bush" pilot since I was a kid. I didn't want to be the guy talking to the mic. hanging out the side of the helicopter on the Nat'l Geographic specials, I wanted to be the guy in the pilot seat. Just thought I'd sign the guestbook and join the hundreds of others around the world wishing and praying that you have a safe and successful flight. Dave

Here is a song for you. Where I Go Climbing under a barbed wire fence by the railroad ties climbing over the old stone wall I am bound for the riverside well I go to the river to soothe my mind ponder over the crazy days of my life just sit and watch the river flow find a place on the riverbank where the green rushes grow see the wind in the willow tree in the branches hanging low well I go to the river to soothe my mind to ponder over the crazy days of my life watch the river flow ease my mind and my sould where I go well I will go to the river from time to time wander over these crazy days in my mind watch the river flow where the willow branches grow by the cool rolling waters moving gracefully and slow child it's lovely let the river take it all away the mad pace, the hurry the troubles, the worries just the river take them all away flow away

I accidentally bumped into your website some six months ago. I decided to purchase the National Geographic video, and was very pleased with its quality and entertainment value. I've been flying myself for about three years now in Iceland and share own a Hawk XP, TF-RLR, with six other guys. Unfortunately I missed it when you went through Iceland, but now enjoy reading about your travels on the internet. Looking forward to when your book comes out. Hordur Sverrisson

Good Luck from a fellow polo playing bush pilot. But certainly not in your league as to the latter. In the words of one of my fellow borderlands bush pilots, "Fe en Dios y Adelante!" or for the hispanicly challenged, "Faith in God and full speed ahead!" Touch down in West Texas or Northern Mexico sometime. Some of us in the outback would like to shake your hand.

I disagree with the comments made by the gentleman from London.Saint-Exupery was not only a man of action and science but also philosophy and art-an aviator unafraid of expressing emotion.Tom's education, sensitivity and writing is every bit a reflection of Antoine's very soul.If you ask me the British exploration spirit died with Shackelton. It used to be all you ever heard about were British adventurers. And today-for the first time in a hundred years-the U.K. won't have an America's Cup challenge. Why?No backers. It takes an American to combine courage with marketing savvy to accomplish an expedition like Tom Claytors.Eat our dust Mr. Vorster, eat our dust.

What a curious site! The myth-making, swagger, and self-promotion are outrageous. Typically American, I suppose. Antoine would not be proud, I suspect.

Hey Thomas (Tom) please tell me when your book is published. I will quickly go buy it. I don't think it would be fun. I said this because you said when we get exciting for something when we get it or go there it wouldn't be exciting. So I mean the opposite of what I just said about your book. If you can't replay that is fine. Everyone understands why. I think you should know my friend Captain Kim and Boat the plane. It was really funny when you did the flying part for Boat. Thanks for coming to all the schools you been to. You were great on the film and while you were talking to us. I thank you from all of the schools and kids in different countries. I was one of the many students you gave atalk to at NIST. You really touched me and opened my eyes. You've done more in your short life than most people could even dream about. You're living proof that dreams come true and someone that everyone can dream to be 'just like one day'. I know I do. I know youve inspired me and most of the students here. Thankyou for openeing my eyes and soul and for helping me to see what's over the edge. Who knows maybe one day I'll take that extra step and fly. I'm so amazed at how you fought for your dream and that the fighting had paid off after so long. Its amazing how you turn a dream into reality only if you believe...and i guess believing is the main thing to make something successful. good luck in your reality/dream... and i'll keep believing if you do.

Hi Tom, your journal is absolutely wonderful! A real inspiration to others. Your adventures are mind-boggling. I am following your progress very closely and can't wait for the next episode! Wherever you are at the moment, my thoughts and good wishes go with you. May God bless you in your endeavours, particularly on the conservation issues - much needed right now! I have a few friends who are commercial pilots and they are also finding your logs fascinating. I would love to meet you if you should ever get back to Johannesburg and treat you to a real old-fashioned home-cooked meal while listening to your many interesting tales.

Hey Tom! After having your old email address go out, I finally found this out here on the 'web! Remember the trips around Suswa and Logonont in the Rift Valley? Remember going deep in those caves in Suswa? I sure miss those days... Well, now I am married to a wonderful woman here in sunny San Diego. Soon to be moving up to Denver so my wife can finish her PhD. Going to be back in Kenya this summer with her and would like to hook up if you happen to be anywhere in the East African region... Also, remember the picture you took of me in the Suswa cave? If you still have it, I'd love to get a copy sometime. Not much else... life is good... hope all well and safe flying! (PS - make sure you stay away from charging Wilderbeasts! *laugh* and flying around the bush in the twilight without a landing strip!) Kwaherini! Renny & DeeDee

My partner & I run the flight school in San Francisco where your brother Warren is flying. We just watched the video, and loved it. Hope the adventure is going well (we're buying a couple of videos to help the cause!) If your travels ever take you through California, We'd love to meet you. Wishing you good flying - Diamond Aviation

Just read what I sent. Monrovia, not Monroville. Stay away anyway.

Gud Luck. Can relate to ur experiences. Lived in Abidjan but worked all over West Africa. Monroville is the worst & Banjul is the best. May ur landings = ur takeoffs & watch out for shagilla & giardia. They both kick ass.

Interesting adventure. I just returned from Oshkosh and saw a couple new bush plane designs. I have been flying since '75 and done a little STOL work.
